It really was quite something. Upon close examination of this petrified tree you can make out the contours of the outer bark and the knots within what used to be wood. It was so perfect that it seemed to me that I could almost make out the tree rings. To be fair, that wasn't quite the case, the mineralization made that too difficult, but I was in such awe of that I was seeing, that perhaps I let my imagination get away from me. I did examine several different trees during my exploration of the back country, but I never quite got to a sample that I could age using the rings.
