I would definitely encourage folks to drive along Route 1 in Maine if you have a little extra time to spare. The road parallels the Atlantic Ocean and has much better scenery than driving along the interstate. There are several small towns along the way that are nice to visit and plenty of tasty seafood restaurants to choose from. We had planned on stopping in Wiscasset to dine at Red’s Eats (which was amazing), but did not expect to enjoy the city the way we did. We spent some time walking by the water and visited several of the local shops. Every person we met here was incredibly friendly. We did get to Bar Harbor a little later than I had hoped for, but it was well worth it.
