Winter Sports Galore - Lake Placid

Lake Placid, NY, United States
7 Kudos
While most people want to get out of the cold weather on winter holiday, my husband insisted that we travel to a place that would have winter activities, so what better place than Lake Placid, NY? Home of the 1980 Olympics, if you want winter sports you came to the right place. We went to the Olympic Museum to start to see so many treasures of the past. Then we went to the bobsled complex for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bobsled on an actual Olympic track. Well, you start halfway down, but you still reach speeds of 60 miles per hour, and it was quite exhilarating. Then we went to the ski jump complex and took the chair lift to the top of the jump. It’s really high! We went ice skating on the outdoor speed skating ring, and then stopped inside to see the Herb Brooks Arena where the Miracle on Ice took place. We headed over to Whiteface Mountain and took the gondola to the top of the ski runs. We also found a local place to go snow tubing. It’s a winter wonderland!

Whiteface Lodge
This place is amazing! It has a great restaurant, beautiful accommodations. There are tons of activities like ice skating, a pool/hot tub, game room, and fire pit to make s'mores. Great place for a family vacation. Would def return.

Points of interest

Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex
You can take a chair lift to the top of the jump and see the whole area from the top. I wouldn't be brave enough to try, but we did see some people practicing on the smaller jump to the side. Pretty neat. Doesn't take too much time.
Miracle on Ice
Interesting to see this place in person, when such a memorable event took place here. Did not get to skate.
Olympic Speed Skating Oval
We skated here at the evening session. This is an outdoor rink, so bundle up. Very fun.
Bobsled Run Lane
Not the cheapest activity, but an awesome experience. 2 people fit into a 4 person bobsled, with a driver and brake man to keep you safe. You go up to 60 mph. It's AWESOME!

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery
Convenient place to get some craft beer on your break from skating or the Olympic Museum.

Nice photo. Hope to make it there in 2018 for the Ironman triathlon they have there in the summer.
