Lake Tekapo, Canterbury, New Zealand
3 Kudos
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve-the observatory is located on top of Mt John (associated with the University of Canterbury) We only went during the day (obviously too poor to afford the tour fees) but it was such an incredible place. We were camping locally so figured we would have no problem seeing the stars. If I were to go back I would definitely do a tour though so someone could point out the constellations and to have a look through the observatory. Lake Tekapo is absolutely incredible in itself. Make sure you wear a big fluffy coat in the winter months ;)

Lake Tekapo Motels & Holiday Park
We camped here for the night-decent kitchens and bathrooms and a little media room. Waking up to Lake Tekapo is unbeatable! I do suggest camping in a self-contained camper rather than a van (especially as it gets COLD in winter!) but great fun!!

Points of interest

Tekapo Springs
FANTASTIC! We were absolutely chilled to the bone after driving and sleeping in our van in the middle of NZ winter, so we parted with our money to bask in these hot springs for a few hours one night. Well, well worth it. I was warmed through and it seemed very clean and hygienic, also very pretty! 3 Large pools, all different temperatures.
Lake Tekapo
Amazing!!! Such a great place to wake up, the bluest blue of water and the surrounding mountains take your breath away!

Looks beautiful there. Wonder what the night sky would've been like?
