While returning home from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, I made a stop at the Willacy County Historical Museum and Community Center. This museum is housed in the old Raymondville High School. Raymondville takes a lot of pride in being the gateway to the Rio Grande Valley. The Museum reflects this pride.
As you tour the museum, you will see a large number of artifacts and displays that discuss the history of Willacy County and the Rio Grande Valley. Some of the major topics include agriculture, the Citrus industry, and the families that have called this area home.
The museum boasts an incredible collection of dresses made for the fiestas in the area. These dresses reflect the strong Hispanic culture in the region. I am not an expert in textiles by any means, but I was very impressed by this collection.
Even the building is a real treat. The old high school still features decorative tin ceilings in many areas.
If you are visiting South Texas, you owe it to yourself to stop in Raymondville and visit the Willacy County Museum and Community Center. It is a great asset to the Rio Grande Valley.
