When most people in the New England area hear "Whiteface Mountain," they probably think of great skiing. However, if you are in the Adirondack area in the summer, Whiteface Mountain is a great stop off if you enjoy the outdoors and want a stunning 360º panoramic view of the Lake Placid region.
After a drive up some switchback roads, there is a short hike that can take 30-45 minutes to the peak of Whiteface Mountain. There were people of all ages doing this hike, and while I wouldn't say it was easy, it is definitely accessible to anyone in reasonable shape.
On a clear day, many Adirondack peaks are visible from the top, as well as a few of the 1980 Olympic sites in Lake Placid.
