A primary purpose for a short visit to Oklahoma was to learn a little Native American history and visit places where they are an important part of the population today. Norman isn't one such place, but I was pleased to see a special exhibition on wedding dresses of the Osage culture at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History when I passed through the city. The Osage were originally from the Ohio and Mississippi River areas but were forced to relocate in Oklahoma during the 19th century. The tradition of weddings with elaborate dresses for the bride and attendants persisted well into the 20th century, and the exhibit featured a good number of typical dresses with good descriptive panels.
