Just north of Washington Square Park is a little hidden area called "Washington Mews". The land was once part of a large farm and later converted into two-story stables that were used by the rich and famous and were a nice source of income. During the beginning of the 20th century many artists moved in for a while but in the 1950s the New York University (which occupies a large part around Washington Square Park) leased most of the buildings and changed them to offices and faculty housings. The street however remains gated and is off limits for cars but it is possible to walk through. Transforms you back into history.
