Arriving at Waimangu around 2:30pm, we came just in time for the last 2 hour guided volcanic walk tour + a 1 hour Lake Rotomahana cruise. The hilly walk route was pretty straightforward with various volcanic features, such as the Echo Crater, Southern Crater, Inferno Lakes, etc. Their natural reactions produce geysers, steam, bubbles creating interesting scenery.
At the end of the walk, we boarded a boat for a cruise. The 3 of us were the only ones on the boat so it felt like a private tour. During the cruise, the captain explained how the volcanic eruption in 1886 led to vast changes of the landscapes. After the hour-long cruise, we boarded an internal site bus back to our starting point.
Points of interest
Being the most powerful geyser in the world, it was responsible for drastically changing the Waimangu landscape over a century ago.
