Versailles is hard to fathom missing on a trip to France. This magnificent palace was the very symbol of the complete domination of the French monarchy upon France and their colonies. It's hard to avoid crowds here, especially in the summer. We went in August and made the mistake of getting there around 9am with the rest of the tourists so there was no way to avoid the longest lines I've ever been in, even longer than Disney World! Try to book a tour that will get you in easier, or arrive earlier in the day to beat the crowds somewhat. But regardless, it's worth the wait. The French Sun court can be imagined as if you were there in the days of King Louis XIV. The French government operated from here from 1682 until 1789 when the royal family was forced to return to Paris just before the French Revolution brought the monarchy down in ruins.
