Uppercuts. Thank god for these shortcuts throughout the mountains. Even though we had decided to cut off a slightly longer road in favor of the more direct but undoubtedly more hilly trails, the bridges equalled salvation. Sometimes cutting off hundreds of feet in descent and following ascent, when you saw one of these in the distance you said a silent prayer to the developers of the trail for saving you a half hour’s climb and a whole lot of effort. Needless to say that was only for those of us without a healthy fear of heights. Swaying on one of these things while looking down and seeing air beneath your feet could not have been easy.
