The beaches of Ocean City were beautiful. Long and wide, they just invite the visitor to lay out under the sun and relax. However, at the end of each block, one of these ugly pipe jutted out of the sand and out into the ocean. Why are they there and why do they extend out so far? They are storm drains. Catching run off from the local streets, these cast iron pipes channel storm water away from the beach, thus delaying erosion, and directly into the surf, beyond the low tide line. They certainly were ugly, but they were important.
