I had a full day ahead, all to myself, before I joined up with my tour group in Quito later that evening. I had done my research and knew I wanted to climb the winding roads that led to one of the highest peaks in this sky-high city to see the El Panecillo, a modern winged behemoth with fantastic views of Quito. I'd read walking up the hill was a bit dangerous since it was in a seedier area, so I opted for a taxi. We stopped at a fruit stand along the way where I indulged in some fantastic pineapple. And then we arrived - the statue was even bigger than I'd imagined, the giant Virgin of Quito stretching 45 meters high. She was built not too long ago, at the end of the 1970s. Go inside for a bird's eye view!
