The coolest place I've ever lived...

Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand
2 Kudos
Flag
We lived just outside Queenstown, NZ in Frankton this past winter. Queenstown is like the traveller mecca of NZ. It's tiny, full of backpackers, expensive, super fun, and like no other place I've ever been. We decided to live just 10 min down the road to save some money and lessen the pressure of drinking every night with all the other travelers. We had the Remarkables out our bedroom window and the most beautiful morning commute along Lake Wakatipu. I still can't believe I called this place home for a while and I really miss it!
Story Details

Transportation

Queenstown Airport
Small but will be expanding (maybe already has) with direct flights to/from Oz and China....is this good or bad for QT??? It's a big argument among locals

Hotels

Mantra Marina
Meant to be a nice stay with outstanding views.

Restaurants

Hamills Restaurant
Open later than other places in the area
Frankton Ale House
Expensive, but just the same as everywhere else in the area. Beers and pub food are both comforting in the freezing cold!

Special activities

Alpine Aqualand
Cool place. The pool looks amazing and they also have a ton of other activities in the building. Lots of things for kids to do and workout classes & gym for adults
Cardrona
The most popular ski and snowboard mountains. I am a spaz so I didn't try my hand here (hello expensive!) but I worked with a lot of travelers who come solely to work at Cardrona every season.
Double Cone
Another ski/snowboard area. I think Cardrona is the most popular but Remarks and Double Cone are cheaper. I think!
The Remarkables
Skiing, snowboarding....known to the locals as 'Remarks' :)
