One of the excursions that we did when we stopped at Ketchikan during our Royal Caribbean cruise vacation was to the Tlingit village located in Saxman. This village dates back to the late 18 hundreds. It was an interesting stop and we learned history and meaning of the totem poles, how they are carved and even had an opportunity to see carving process in action. More importantly, our tour guide did an excellent job explaining symbolism of creatures featured on the totem poles. The Tlingit culture is very different from ours so we had to quickly learn differences between clans and symbols to be able to follow stories told by our tour guide.
