The Big Apple

New York, NY, United States

Finally made it down to the big city! Living close to Boston, you forget how big other cities are...I hadn't been to New York in about years, so it was a welcome long weekend experiencing the energy of Times Square and Manhattan Island. We spent most of the 4 days we had there in Lower Manhattan, staying in the Tribeca area. I really enjoyed the area, a bit quieter on the weekends, but an easy 15 minute ride on the subway up to Times Square, or just a bit further to Central Park. Alternatively, head south to Wall Street, the Staten Island Ferry, or the 9/11 Memorial.

Transportation

St. George Terminal
St. George Terminal
Catch the Staten Island ferry for an interesting way to kill an hour or so. Stay on the west side of the ferry for the best views of the Statue of Liberty. East side for Brooklyn Bridge, north for views of Manhattan.

Culture and experiences

Theater District
Theater District
Must see. Walk through at some point during the day, then come back at night to see the difference.
Westfield World Trade Center
Westfield World Trade Center
At least walk through this Westfield structure. Don't buy anything, too expensive, but it looks like something straight out of Star Wars.
American Museum of Natural History
American Museum of Natural History
Massive. Get there early to avoid the crowd of stroller-pushing armies. Pay what you wish.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Classic museum and a must see in New York. It's technically "pay what you wish" and also party of the BoA Museums on Us program, so don't be turned off by the sticker price.

For kids

Central Park South
The sheer size of Central Park is amazing. Talk about room for the kids to run!

Hotels

Sheraton Tribeca New York Hotel
Sheraton Tribeca New York Hotel
Great spot, close to the subway, awesome roof deck and ok breakfast if you can get lounge access.

Restaurants

Creamline
Great buffalo chicken sandwich, plenty of good lunch options, located at Chelsea Market.
Hot & Crusty Bakery Cafe
Good soups and sandwiches, even better cakes and desserts. Prices aren't bad, but you could find cheaper if you looked.
Black Tap
Crazy milkshakes. Honestly, a bit overpriced, but the atmosphere is definitely there.
Bareburger
Try the new Impossible Burger. Don't ask what it is, see if you can figure it out ;)
Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles II
Two locations, this one takes credit cards. Tiny spot, with only a few seats. Great homemade noodles!
Percy's Pizza
Not bad for dollar pizza! Thin crust, and an extra dollar for toppings. Great late night snack.
456 Shanghai Cuisine
Try the soup dumplings! Cash only, and a bit hot inside, but totally worth it.

Shopping

Disney Store
Similar to the M&Ms Store, but if you have kids they'll definitely want to go in.
Market Street
Check out Chelsea Market, very cool industrial space turned into restaurants and shopping.
M&M'S World
M&M'S World
Overpriced, crowded, loud, and smells too strongly of fake chocolate. But c'mon, you have to go!

Special activities

Minskoff Theatre
Current home of the Lion King on Broadway. Without a doubt the best show I've seen - the lights, sets, and costumes were phenomenal.
