Széchenyi Chain Bridge

Budapest, Hungary

We spent several days in Budapest, Hungary, in May and had a fantastic view of the infamous Széchenyi Chain Bridge from our room at the Sofitel Hotel. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge spans the Danube River and connects the Buda and Pest Hungary - our hotel was on the Pest side. At night the bridge is illuminated and quite beautiful. Construction of the Chain Bridge began in 1839 and it was the first permanent stone Bridge in Hungary. It literally is a suspension bridge that is hanging from massive chains. There are pedestrian walkways on each side of the bridge and there are sturdy concrete barricades protecting people on foot from motorized traffic. We walked the span to the Buda side and checked out the lion sculptures, then walked back to our hotel. There are great views of the expanse of the city on both sides and its fun to watch the river cruise ship traffic pass below.
