If I am remembering correctly, we made a stop at the beautiful Makena State Park Beach when I was looking for a place to snorkel. This is a beautiful beach, also known as “Big Beach,” but for me it was too well known. I decided against this location because there were more people and surfers plus there was no shade for my wife to relax in close to the water while I was in the water. This is located on the south side of the island of Maui and a little bit of a drive from Wailea but it was an enjoyable drive along the two-lane road. There was quite a bit of traffic for a weekday. If you don’t mind the crowd and if there are no surfers it looks like a good place to snorkel. I’m guessing because it is a State Park with lifeguards on duty it is a family friendly beach for the children to enjoy.
