Walking across the bridge over the Tiber River to Via della Conciliazione and then walking straight ahead to St. Peter’s Square was an awesome experience. The Square was designed by the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini, it was finished in 1667 and everywhere you look is an amazing sight. The Bernini colonnade surrounds the Square, with statues on top (which I found to be rather interesting to find statues on top of the buildings). In the center is the Vatican Obelisk and on either side of the Obelisk you can see the Maderno Fountain and the Carlo Fontana’s Fountain. At certain times, the Square can be extremely busy. We were there in the early afternoon, so it wasn’t as crowded. Wandering around this place was must do when in Rome.
