Known as the Papal Basilica of St Peter’s Basilica is an Italian Renaissance style church located in Vatican City. The present basilica was constructed between April 1506 and November 1626 replacing the previous basilica from the 4th century. Catholic Traditions say that the basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter who was one of the Apostles of Jesus. The Pope presides over many services throughout the year, which brings up to over 80,000 worshipers. Of course they do not all fit inside the basilica so St Peter’s Square handles the overflow. The basilica is also the home to many famous works of art by world famous artists like Michelangelo. Regardless of beliefs I recommend a visit to Vatican City to see the amazing sights and art.
