While touring a Fijian village we had the opportunity to see some of the village’s fishermen getting ready to head out and try to bring in a haul. We spoke with them and they said that the folks in the village prefer to eat reef fish, and a lot of what they would catch would be things like snapper. They said their preferred method of fishing was to take this long net out on a boat to a place off shore but still within the lagoon, spread the net, and then drag it to a shallow spot while closing it down. They said they do get some bycatch of things that they do not want to eat, but that they are always able to throw these critters back without causing them any harm. So that is a nice and sustainable method of fishing.
