One of the absolute highlights of our time in Basque Country was San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. After a couple of rainy days, we managed to luck out and get a beautiful day when we went to Gaztelugatxe.Basically you park up on a hill on the mainland and take a path down to the waters edge, where you follow a footbridge over and up onto the island. There is a church at the top of the island. The views are stunning, and footbridge makes for some great pictures (Game of Thrones fans will recognize the bridge too as scenes were filmed there!)The walk is not too long from the parking to the church, however it is a strenuous walk/hike and has lots of steps and fairly steep uphill portions (especially on the way back up) so comfortable shoes are definitely a must. I have bad knees so it was rough on the way back up to the parking area for me, but well worth it for sure. If you are unable to walk out to the island, it is still worth going, as there is an observation point near the parking area and a restaurant that also has a beautiful view. Parking is free, and there is no entrance fee.
