The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria is a large 94 acre garden just southeast of Melbourne downtown. The garden was founded in 1846 when the government set aside land southeast of downtown to build this garden. The land slopes from the heights down to the river. There are lots of artificial lawns and lakes, beautiful trees, and garden beds with plants over 8500 different species. There are cool sections such as the herb garden, palms, bamboo, arid (desert) garden, ferns, and Southern China section. The free gardens are open to all everyday from 7:30am to sunset. Tripadvisor rates the gardens as the top attraction in Melbourne!
