We were walking toward the waterfront at dusk when we came across this graveyard. I was pretty bummed that it wasn’t open, but there is a small area you can peek through. As I have written before, I love historic cemeteries and this is a notable one, for many leaders of American Independence are laid to rest here. The burial ground has 1400 markers, but over 2,500 have been lost due to erosion over time. Luckily, in 1864, the cemetery warden compiled a book of the fading inscriptions. It is unknown where many of the 2,500 are buried, but at least there is a record. There is a $3 admission charge or guided tours for $8. There is a tradition to throw a penny on Benjamin Franklin’s grave, but all that penny tossing is taking a toll on the soft marble tombstone. So throw gently if you do!
