Just about two miles from Alqosh Iraq, you can visit the Rabban Hormizd Monastery. It is also about 30 miles from Mosul. The monastery was founded in the seventh century and named after its founder, Rabban Hormizd. The drive here was a mixture of flat sandy scenery to surprise appearances of small villages. The monastery is built halfway up the mountains and upon and enormous rock. There are also rows of caves visible on the side of the hills where people used to live. The setting is amazing and offers some of the best views of this somewhat isolated region. I highly recommend coming here when you are in Kurdistan.
