A wonderful day trip by bus from Hido-Takayama takes you to the picturesque Shogawa River Valley, a mountainous region spanning all the way from Gifu to Toyama Prefectures. The valley is home to a couple of villages that were declared a UNESCO world heritage site in the mid 90s. The bus from Takayama stops at the town of Ogimachi, to see the other villages you will have to change to another bus. The villages are famous for its traditional farmhouses, some of them are more than 250 years old. We were there on a foggy and cold day, although it cleared up after a while. Summer is probably the better time to visit the area.
