During the times of royalty in Madagascar the rulers lived in a palace at Ambohimanga. Life was sumptuous- 12 nearby hills suggested the need for 12 wives. I did not ask what happened when the sovereign was female, which did occur, including the last ruler. Visitors can see the living quarters of the royal family, though photography is not permitted indoors. Airy verandas offered beautiful views of the hills and other surroundings and the grounds were used for solemn speeches, celebrations and rituals. A mound outside the palace is a place where animals were sacrificed as part of important events.
