The beautiful hilltop town of Orvieto, in the Umbrian region of central Italy is a great stop that is easily accessed by train when traveling between Rome and Florence. A funicular cable car quickly carries you up the 1000 ft incline directly from the train station. This town dates back to Etruscan times and provides gorgeous vistas out across the Umbrian landscape. The town is famous for dishes of wild boar and truffles. Numerous shops make nice shopping as well. The town hosts large numbers of tourists, but an overnight stay provides a more intimate experience once most of the tourists leave that are on day trips.
Easy access via funicular directly from the train station makes Orvieto a perfect stop when exploring Italy by train.
