Located on the River Escault, 10km from the French border, Tournai is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, established by the Romans on the road from Cologne to France. It is known for the huge Cathedral of Notre-Dame, with 5 towers and a rose window. Nearby, the Grand Place is a triangular square lined with bars and restaurants. It’s dominated by the 12th-century Belfry of Tournai, with views over the city. Opposite the belfry is the Romanesque St. Quentin’s Church, and behind that is the medieval Red Fort tower. You definitely see a lot less international tourists in this city which makes it a great place to explore.
