This ruined Abbey like many others must have been beautiful in its day. It straddles the road and the back drop is a river with a bridge crossing. It is set in the Village of Cong which has a lot of local charm. The site has a long history dating to the 7th century when a church was first built followed by a history of destruction and rebuilding.
It won't take a lot of time to see the Abbey but there are other things the village can offer. If you are interested in books, step into Rare & Recent Books with its selection of Irish History books as well as some rare finds you likely not see elsewhere. I made off with a few for my personal library.
