National Museum of Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
3 Kudos
The best reason to visit the National Museum is that it contains the skeleton of Lucy, the 3.2 million year old predecessor to homo sapiens. The bottom floor has a set of very nice displays explaining human (and other animal's) evolution. Besides Lucy, they also have the skeleton of Ardi, a slightly older example of the chain of human evolution. On the main floor, they have some nice artifacts from the recent imperial era of Ethiopia, such as crowns and Haile Selassie's throne. The top two floors were not as interesting to me with contemporary art on one. The top floor had nice ethnographic displays including agricultural tools, weapons, games, musical instruments, etc., but no written explanations. Outside in the courtyard is an eclectic collection, including an antique car, two live tortoises, and a replica Olmec head given to them by Mexico. I'm glad I visisted the museum during my limited stopover in Addis, but it could be so much better.
