The Black Orchid is the national flower of Belize. While it occurs naturally and thrives in Belize, it is not unique to Belize as it can be found in Mexico and throughout Central America. Complicating things, there’s probably twenty some odd distinct species of orchid which share the common name “black orchid.” For the avoidance of confusion, this species is Encyclia Cochleatum. The flowers on this plant are quite striking but the blossoms are very small. You have to get close to see ‘em. Also, the “black” in the common name is a misnomer since the petals have a deep purple color, sometimes approaching the appearance of black.
