Nakiska Ski Area

Kananaskis, AB, Canada

After spending a couple days at the Calgary Stampede, battling swarms of people and being entertained to the max, it was time to head west to chill out for a few days. I headed west to the Canadian Rockies for some R&R and take in some magnificent scenery. South of Banff and just an hour or so away from Calgary is Kananaskis Country, a resort area with dozens of lakes, hikes, waterfalls and ski areas, the latter of which, is the Nakiska Ski Area. Nakiska Ski resort hosted the alpine events during the 1988 Winter Olympics and is now a ski resort open to the public during the winter months. It has a dozen or so runs in all varying degrees of difficulty. Of course being in the midst of summer, it was completed deserted. The road going in was completely closed off one morning during the early morning hours, but the barricade was removed later in the day so was able to drive into the empty, deserted resort. Kind of eeery in a way!

Hotels

Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, Autograph Collection
Stayed 3 blissful nights at this beautiful mountain lodge in Kananaskis Country. Got upgraded to a double loft room with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Points of interest

Mount Lorette Ponds
Picturesque ponds in Kananaskis Country. Watch out for wildlife in the area!
Troll Falls
A beautiful set of waterfalls just a few minutes drive away from the Pomeroy Kananaskis lodge where I stayed. Makes for an excellent 1/2 day activity.
Mount Kidd
Had a breathtaking view of this mountain right from the patio of my hotel room.
Troll Falls Trail
A wonderful day hike to Troll Falls is a fun family activity. Kids can look out for troll dolls on the trail to keep them entertained.

Restaurants

Two Trees Bistro @ Kananaskis Nordic Spa
Newly opened café/sandwich shop within the Nordic Spa at the resort. Great food and drinks!
Woody's Pub & Patio
Woody's serves up typical pub and bar food late in the night right in the Kananaskis resort area. Very convenient as there aren't too many restaurant options outside the resort/hotel area.

Special activities

Kananaskis Nordic Spa
Soak yourself in pools, steam rooms and hot tubs of varying temperatures at this Nordic Spa. It was absolutely wonderful. I received a $10 discount for being a guest of the next door hotel which made the cost quite reasonable. (~$55 USD).
Mount Kidd RV Park
If you have an RV, this is a great campground to camp at amongst all the beauty.
Nakiska Ski Area
Major ski resort just an hour away from Calgary in Kananaskis Country.
