My Ancestors Cave

Springfield, PA, United States
20 Kudos
My fathers family is originally from Springfield, PA. His relative, Jane Lownes lived in a cave in Springfield until a house was built. The house was located on 150 acres which was property given to her by William Penn in 1685. Legend has it her husband Hugh may have met William Penn in prison in 1669 in England. Sadly Hugh died in prison and Jane made the trip to the United States on her own, with her children, to avoid religious persecution. The cave stands on what is now the Jane Lownes Park but the cave is closed and not open to visitors. My family, and extended family, had the privilege of attending a dedication ceremony to the marker to the cave/park which was part of an Eagle Scout project. In addition to the park my family has a church in Springfield named after them and lots of information in the historical society on the family. The Lownes' were very well known in that area for years.
