Avila kind of gets lost in shuffle these days, but it is major historical center with an impressive history. This really comes across when one visits the regional museum which is just outside of the old city. One thing to keep in mind is that there are two parts of the museum. The main part, and across from it a part housed in an ancient church that contains a major mosaic and other archaeological finds, including a bunch of those ancient bull like stone statues that you see at Salamanca. Best of all is that the museum is free to enter.
