Morrow Mountain State Park

Albemarle, NC, United States

Eons ago the Uwharries (pronounced you war ees) were a mountain range that rose as much as 20,000 feet above sea level. Over time, the mountains eroded and today the highest peak is Morrow Mountain at 936 feet.

Morrow Mountain State Park has four of these ancient mountain peaks which were once quarried by Indians to make spear points and tools. Today the park features over fifteen miles of hiking trails and 6 miles of bridle trails. There’s also mountain biking, swimming, picnicking, camping, and cabin rentals. The park covers over 4700 acres and borders Lake Tillery, which is just south of Badin Lake (see my story Paddling Badin Lake).
