Braking for more historical markers, I came across this one on U. S. Highway 17 south of Charleston. William A. Washington was a cavalry officer during the Revolutionary War who fought battles in the Carolinas in the 1780s. He married a local girl, Jane Elliott, in 1782 and settled down on a little plantation called Sandy Hill that was owned by his wife. Unlike most of us, William really was related to George Washington, being George’s second cousin, so when George came through on his Presidential junket in 1791 (see my story, he naturally invited his cousin to stay with him and the missus.
