Israel is a mix of religion and cultures and it shows in the food that you see on the streets. We stumbled upon a huge Middle eastern / Arabic bakery in Petah Tikva that has so many unusual desserts. A common theme - lots of honey, nuts, especially pistachios and thin phyllo dough. My favorite dessert there was baklava. Another popular and were common dessert is halva. It is made from pressed sesame seed paste and sweets with honey. This deliciously sweet confection has spread to various cultures and can be found across an entire Middle East. Stopping at the bakery is an easy way to try new foods- typically they have samples.
