There are plenty of sites around the Yucatan peninsula where you can explore what the Mayans built over the centuries. Many of them are crowded with tourists - but some of the sites are tucked away, partially or nearly wholly taken over by the jungle, and if you run into half a dozen people in an afternoon, that's about right.
Yaxunah is one of those sites. There's a modern Mayan village a few kilometers down the road - which is also worth a visit; however, it's easy to spend hours roaming the huge temple complex and marketplace that used to thrive here...
