In Durham, North Carolina, tobacco and cigarettes play a large role in the history of the city. It may be taboo nowadays to smoke, but cigarettes were once the largest driver of the economy in the city. The city recognizes this past, and has tried to preserve it while still moving on into the future that doesn't involve smoking. The Lucky Strike building, once a huge cigarette and tobacco plant, is now surrounded by hip apartments and restaurants. The smokestack that bears its name still stands tall amongst the redevelopment. It was interesting to see a part of history amongst the new and thriving area.
