Dog Island is an interesting place, rich in history. It is accessible by either boat or by use of the private air strip. There is little more here than a handful of private houses and miles of beautiful beach. No hotels, condos, or any of that. But you could probably score a vacation rental by owner house out here. Inhabited by ancient natives, “discovered” by the French in 1536, and used by the Union army during the Civil War to blockade the port of Apalachicola include some of its history. More recently, it was used as a training and practice ground for the amphibious D-Day invasions of World War II, as part of the US Army’s Camp Gordon Johnston.
