Long Weekend in the Brandywine Valley

Chadds Ford, PA, United States

Flag
As a long weekend away from Washington, DC we traveled just 2.5 hours north to the Brandywine Valley, on the border between Pennsylvania and Delaware. Just outside of Philadelphia, this area offers tons to do from wineries, to antiquing, to historical tours, hiking, and more! We had a great couple of nights at the Fairville Inn B&B and loved sampling the local flavors and wines at the Chaddsford and Galer wineries. Home to many du Pont family estates, there's also no shortage of museum properties for history buffs! Definitely recommend saving your trip til the Spring or Summer if you're a gardening enthusiast, as the grounds at these estates are world class.

Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery
Great rustic tasting room with beautiful views over the vines. We came in November, but could really see sitting on the patio for hours with friends enjoying a bottle of wine.
Chaddsford Winery
Great place with a lovely tasting room. Many wines to choose from, though a little on the sweeter side.

Culture and experiences

Battlefield of the Brandywine
Battlefield of the Brandywine
Lovely property with restored historical buildings. We didn't make it in time for the tour but were still able to visit the grounds on our own.

Brandywine River Museum of Art
An absolute must-see for fans of American art. Incredible collection of Hudson and Brandywine Valley artists from the early 1900s. Be sure to leave time for the site visits to the Wyeth artist studios.
Winterthur
Note that note all tickets here include the mansion your, so be sure to book early. Also, while the museum galleries are lovely, you really miss out on some of the experience in the wintertime as the award winning grounds and gardens aren't in full bloom.
Nemours Estate
Nemours Estate
A must-see! Beautiful home styled after Petite Trianon in Paris with stunning interior furnishings and "revolutionary" technology from the 1900s. The chauffeur's garage full of historical cars is also excellent
