The Lenape tribe (now known more often as Delaware) were among the early groups to come into contact with European settlers, and were the ones who signed the famous treaty with William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Despite that potentially promising event, they, like most other tribes, were eventually resettled, many of them to Oklahoma, where they have their headquarters at Anadarko, southwest of Oklahoma City. Indian gaming is a big industry now in the United States, though it affects the economy of various tribes in different ways. I was interested to see this casino north of town with the original Lenape name. The turtle is the symbol of the tribe, whose idea of their lands as "Turtle Island," has gained traction in the general population in recent years.
