Laguna Chaxa is a lake in the middle of the vast area of Salar de Atacama, big salt flat in Chilean Atacama desert. To get to the Laguna Chaxa, you need to drive on smaller road for some time from the Ruta 23. Added charm was the road is heavily under construction which made our drive longer. The lake itself is a bit less scenic than others, but there are plenty of birds, most importantly flamingos. Just like many lakes around in the area, Lake Chaxa has no drainage trapped by the high volcanic Andean mountains on the east and another sub mountain range on the west, which makes the lake rich in minerals and salty. That seems to be a perfect habitat for many birds.
