During our trip to Miami for a Caribbean cruise we spent five days in Miami Beach after the cruise. I had never been to Key West so I booked a tour, well it was just a bus ride and the driver talked as he drove, so we could see Key West for the first time. It was about four hours each way because of hotel pick-ups and drop-offs and we had 5 1/2 hours to walk around Key West. I had a short list of things that I wanted to see, do and eat. One of places I wanted to see was the lighthouse. I did not take some of our precious time and stand in line to climb to the top, I settled for outside pictures. Besides it was very crowded at the top so I wouldn't have enjoyed it much. This is the third lighthouse to be built in Key West, the previous two were destroyed by hurricanes. This lighthouse was completed in 1848 and today is the only lighthouse in the US totally within city limits. Because of the growth of the city buildings and the growth of the trees, in 1894 the lighthouse was raised 20 feet. In 1969 the Coast Guard relinquished control of the lighthouse to Monroe County.
