As part of our stay at Mikawaya Ryokan, we were served a traditional kaiseki dinner. This dinner included beautifully plated small dishes, brought out one at a time, consisting mainly of seafood and various vegetables. We were handed a menu in Japanese (so to this day I still don't know what we were served!). The meal itself was a bit difficult - part of it were extremely fishy and our Western palates had a tough time. But it was definitely beautiful and a unique experience.
