Jekyll Island - A fun and relaxing way to spend a weekend

Jekyll Island, GA, United States
12 Kudos
The pictures of the driftwood beach on the Internet were mind blowing. So we decided to head out and check it out. We headed to Jekyll Island, Georgia. It is about a 5 hr drive from our place. We reached Jekyll Island in the evening . Before we headed to the island we just crossed over the Sidney Lanier Bridge to Brunswick and spent about an hour exploring the place. There is a small fee to enter the island. We had booked a villa at Villas By The Sea Resort. It was a pretty villa with a garden area right outside the back door and the sound of waves right behind the villa. We reached Jekyll Island in the evening, watched a pretty sunset at Saint Andrews beach and just drove around the island, which is pretty small but beautiful at the same time. We stopped at Tortuga Jacks Mexican restaurant for dinner. It was a neat restaurant with live performances and music . I liked the cocktail they served in a big coconut with a pirate face on it :)The next morning we headed to the driftwood beach which was one of the main reasons we visited the Jekylly Island. We were there really early to watch the morning colors. It was about a 15 min drive from the villa. There is a spacious parking lot and then you have to walk into the beach. There was not a single soul on the beach and we had the beach to ourselves - cool morning breeze, the pleasant sound of waves and the sun beginning to rise. It was such a peaceful time. We saw lots of driftwoods on the beach - barren branches of different shapes and sizes . It is a real treat for photographers clicking these driftwoods especially in the early morning where the sky has amazing colors. We spent about an hour there walking along the shore and the driftwoods. Once the sun was out we returned. We then drove around the island visited the Jekyll Historic District that has numerous huge hotels/clubs/cottages.Jekyll Island is a very relaxing place for a weekend and can be clubbed with few other islands around. The Driftwood beach in particular is amazing
