We spent a week on the Italian Amalfi Coast. We flew in to Naples and were picked up by a driver from our hotel in Positano. We used Positano as abase and visited several of the surrounding small towns. The Amalfi Coast highway is heartstopping. The solid rock mountain is on one side of you and a sheer drop to the Mediterranean on the other. There are hairpin turns and places where the traffic has to be stopped in one direction to allow the oncoming bus to make the turn. Don't rent a car unless you are an excellent and fearless driver. The local bus runs along the coast stopping in many villages. It is like our comfortable air conditioned tour buses. Traveling through Amalfi We visited Vietri, known for it's many ceramic workshops and continued on to Salerno. We went high into the mountains to the village of Ravello to the beautiful Villa Ciambrone with the spectacular view. From Positano there are local tour boats to Capri, the blue grotto, and the green Grotto. All worth seeing. Back in Naples we made sure to visit the museum which displayed many artifacts salvaged from the ruins of Pompeii. We had been to Pompeii on a previous trip. The Amalfi coast has spectacular scenery. It is a very relaxed Italy. A completely different experience that the major cities of Rome, Florence, or Venice. It's a very warm romantic Italy.
