If you only have a short time to visit Canyonlands National Park, the Island In The Sky visitor center on Grand View Point Road is a great place to start. It's only about a 20 mile drive from the intersection of Highways 191 and 313 coming out of Moab, Utah to the visitor center, which is a scenic drive before you even enter the park proper. The Grand View Point located directly across the road from the visitor center allows you to quickly walk from the parking area up a short trail to see one of the most scenic spots in the park. The name "Island in the sky" refers to the huge and level sandstone mesa that lies between the Green and Colorado rivers which lie about 2200 feet below the rim. The spectacular view point here gives you an idea of the immensity of the park's features, and access to the bottom is available on a dirt road that can be accessed by 4 wheel drive vehicles. I arrived late in the afternoon without much time to explore, but just the drive from highway 313 to the Grand Viewpoint at the visitor center gave me a good taste of the features of this beautiful park in a short time frame.
