If you bring your dog

Belfield, ND, United States
10 Kudos
When I saw this sign it cracked me up as it had a huge load of Bison poop underneath it! This sign is in Belfield at the Painted Canyon Visitor Center before you get to Theodore Roosevelt’s Park South Unit in Medora. Dogs are allowed in the park, but they must be on a 6 foot leash at all times or in the car. The dogs can not go on any of the trails.

We originally were going to bring our dog and found out it is VERY difficult to find dog-friendly lodging in Medora. I think there is one campground that allows dogs, but I’m not positive about that. And unless something has changed recently, there are no dog friendly rooms in Medora. There is a ranch that is very rustic 9 miles west that accepts dogs and you may be able to find an Airbnb, but if you are planning on bringing you dog and staying overnight, plan well in advance. Dickinson has several dog friendly options, but it’s a half hour from the park.

TownePlace Suites by Marriott Dickinson
This place is pet-friendly. Only bad thing is it’s 1/2 hour east of the park.
Buffalo Gap Guest Ranch
The closest and one of the few, if only, places to stay near TRNP where you can bring your dog. We almost stayed here, but decided on Dickinson instead because of some of the reviews of the place. It probably would be fine though. It’s about 10 minutes from the west side of the park.

Painted Canyon Visitor Center
This is where the photo was taken. A great stop, which also doubles as Visitor Center, Rest stop.
